Keywords: Acacia drepanolobium, plant-ants, mutualism, Crematogaster

Photographer's caption: Acacia drepanolobium, Loliondo, Tanzania. This odd-looking tree has hard, hollow spheres at the base of its thorns, filled with biting ants. The tree actually encourages these ants by both providing homes and food in special flower-like structures called "extra-floral nectaries".
