I was always the one at the end of the trail, looking at the moss, the pebbles, the bugs wondering how all these wonders co-existed in one place. I was also the one who was always drawing, painting or making things. When I had to chose an academic path in the 1980's I had to chose between two diverging paths. Now, I feel that the opportunities for biology and design have never been greater.
When I completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and an Industrial Design Degree I started working in manufacturing. Plastics, manufacturing, computers and engineering were where the opportunities were. Interdisciplinary approaches focused on these disciplines and it was mainly about bringing engineering and design together.
Meanwhile, the natural world was always at the forefront of my mind. My life experiences from work, travel, raising my children, health issues and activities such as camping, kayaking, gardening have reinforced my belief that biology and design work hand in hand to provide design solutions. I am excited about the work that lies ahead. What a great time to bring these two disciplines together - to find solutions and create products that contribute in a positive, meaningful way.
