Dorna Schroeter has been the coordinator of the P/NW BOCES Center for Environmental Education since 1982. This program serves some 42,000 students each year from schools in Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess, Ulster and Orange counties. In the last decade, she has been working to bring Education for Sustainability to the schools. To that end, she is working with a team from P/NW BOCES and the local schools to develop a K-12 multidisciplinary web-based Education for Sustainability curriculum, co-founded the Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation and organizes both student and teacher workshops. Most recently she has been working with the Biomimicry Institute and serves as an advisor to their education program. In the 2008 she organized the first ever biomimicry camp for kids. She is currently working with the Omega Institute and NYSERDA to offer a national workshop for teachers on biomimicry next summer at Omega and is writing a children’s book on biomimicry set to be released next summer.
In addition, Dorna is a graduate of the Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives (ZERI) certification program, a systems-based approach that uses waste as a value-added resource.
Dorna has served on several boards, taught graduate-level courses, authored many articles and her passion for the ocean led her to write a children’s story about the ocean.
