Originally raised in the Australian countryside, now living in Sydney, my partner and I want to buy land in the mountains with an optimal aspect, providing views and optimal light.
We also want to protect from bush fires and extreme weather including fire storms, extreme heat and drought, flooding, extreme cold; and where possible provide protection from tropical/sub-tropical storms such as cyclones and lesser storms characterised by electrical violence, wind and hail.
We want to find a way of growing our own food, and trying to live in a way that is in tune with nature. To us this means energy efficiency, and preferably finding ways of harnessing our own energy. It also means finding ways of collecting, storing and prolonging the life of water.
We need to find the right geographical location (lattitude/longtitude/altitude), considering/avoiding (if possible) ancient and not so ancient seismic activity/vulcanism). The property needs to support the easy growth of useful vegetation ( for food and other purposes + /pasture for free range and working domestic animals or game. We need to find out more about the types/amount/costs of vegetation/food that can be naturally supported
We want to find a way of building a dwelling that is potentially fire retardant ( eg reinforced concrete basement with concrete ceiling) and solar storm resistant; but has light and airy spaces above ground.
After buying the land, we want to be able to construct our dwelling as a hobby project in a manner mimicing nature. WE also like the idea of organic forms that appear camoflaged due to their sympathy with local natural forms.
