About

IDEA

Fascinated by the concept of morphogenesis in nature – the process of growth and evolution of form in which exoskeleton is affected due to the changes in the endoskeleton.

The question arises how beneficially the understanding of this process can influence the form generation processes in architecture?

CONCERN

In an age of increasing complexity and information overload, many researchers share the view that there is a need to offer an alternative way of designing – intelligent systems – in which autonomy, emergence and distributed functioning replace control, pre-programming, and centralization.

OBJECTIVE

  • To develop a general understanding of the term morphogenesis and to investigate/explore the meaning(s) of the current state of digital morphogenesis in architecture.

  • Acquiring basic knowledge of its application in the design processes by collecting concrete evidences from various experiences done so far.

UNDERSTANDING SO FAR

Besides the rhetoric by the various practitioners that with DMG the architectural design is about to become independent of its intuitive aspect, the intention in the contemporary discourse about DMG is to develop a theoretical pattern/model that digital design is likely to advance our spatial or formal understanding of the making of architecture. The contemporary examples are seen geared for a range of unheard possibilities towards a more structured way of experimentation for conception of architectural form. In this sense the use of digital technology has equipped designers with the tools to handle complex forms vis-à-vis their generation, virtual representation/digital modeling, production, structural systems, and coordinated installation/construction for which conventional/non-digital tools have limited options to offer.
